Was it the rice or the exhaustion... or something else entirely?

Yesterday morning started well.  I even had a gluten free (rice flour) waffle with breakfast.  Then in the afternoon it hit.  Ironically, it hit during Steel Magnolias.  I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to keep my blood sugar above 60.  Of course this happens on a Sunday when the lab is closed.

Yesterday got so rough that I fell asleep and missed the end of the Super Bowl.

Now today I'm worried it will happen again, and I'll need to go to the lab.  I had the bright idea of walking to the lab when it happens, but as I think about it, that might not be too bright to try on my own.  I can't drive when my sugar is low.  It's only two blocks, but it would feel like miles if my sugar was that low. Happily, Cay isn't working today, so if I can go in between 11:00 and 2:00 she can walk in with me.

I'm always analyzing (or over-analyzing) what I eat, and now I'm suspicious of those rice waffles.  Thing is, I worry about everything that's a grain at this point.  This shopping trip I did pick up some grains and carbs:  lentil crackers, baked corn, and rice waffles for me, pita crackers and quinoa for Cay.  But now I'm worried about the grains and carbs... and I don't want to eat any of it.

Anyway, I saw the above Natalie Dee comic this morning, and literally LOL'd.  Cay actually DID get all excited about getting quinoa yesterday.  Sorry Natalie, some people DO get excited about quinoa.  And I love quinoa myself... but with the huge carb count for the stuff, I only eat a tablespoon at a time.

And speaking of food choices... Yesterday I also picked up a huge selection of Kroger's CARBmaster Yogurt, Light Yogurt, Greek Light Yogurt, and Greek Yogurt.  I'm especially excited about the lower carb yogurts, and I'll be reviewing them later this week or over the weekend.  One of the joys of being a Bzz Agent is that I got all those yogurts (16 different ones!) absolutely free.  Cay will be helping me eat the yogurts and giving me her opinions for the reviews.

Carbs and sugar are very much on my mind today.

  2. OK, not diabetic, and I know gluten-free is popular, but a lot of gluten free is "rice" and rice has a really high glycemic index...probably more than whole wheat and more than quinoa, which at least has high protein... :(

  3. C- I know. I've tried gluten free waffles, but I have to be VERY careful with them (only eat one, not eat them on an empty stomach) because the rice reeks havoc with my blood sugar.

I do keep some items with higher glycemic index in the house to bring my sugar up when it tanks.

For me, Gluten free isn't replacing wheat with rice, but not using products that would normally have gluten. We have no bread in the house. No tortillas. And we watch gluten in other items (like our protein bars)

We're not totally gluten free... I like to call our diet "gluten light".

And yes, one of the big problems with "gluten free" is that it's become such a big fad. When my kids were little, they used to say it "cured autism"... There's a lot of hype about gluten. And in my case, I'm not sure if it's gluten or wheat in specific, but I do know I've felt better since changing my diet.

I certainly can't recommend it for everyone, and there is a lot of controversy over the "science"...

    Recently I came across
this NY Times blog article on FB, and this comes as close to giving any scientific explanation as I've seen:
