Inspired by Miz Fit

Once again Carla has inspired me.

Today her post is on the topic You are what you repeatedly do.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Is that what we want to be? Are we dieters, exercisers, diaper changers, check writers, or some other such thing almost to the exclusion of all else? Do we define ourselves by our roles in life, which we are mandated to play out if we want to survive? Our jobs? Motherhood? Our illnesses or physical conditions?

Sometimes we let our definitions determine our lives rather than the other way around. That becomes limiting.

What are you?

As humans, we have a great deal of potential. I'm reminded of this quote:
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
--Excerpt from the notebooks of Lazarus Long, from Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough for Love"
I believe that whole heartedly. To narrow our lives down to those things we do repeatedly, to give ourselves labels and definitions accordingly, seems to me to take away what's best in humanity.

Sometimes, it's the things we do occasionally that better define us: all the little risks we take stepping out of our comfort zone, becoming more versatile, more experienced, more knowledgeable. When we say, "today I break my routine, defy my definitions, and go out and try something new and different" is when we're most human.

What do I do repeatedly? Attempt to defy definition.
and what does that make me? Well, for the most part, happy and fulfilled.
